Large folio (540 x 35 mm). 39 engraved plates after Smellie, Jan van Rymsdyk, and Pieter Camper.20th century textured cloth, titled in gilt on upper cover. Title page re-margined at gutter, dampstaining to top of most leaves, later presentation inscription to title, some chipping to page edges, browning and foxing, library stamp to verso of title.
Provenance: Medical Society of the County of Kings (library stamp).
Second edition of this atlas of plates issued to illustrate Smellie's A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Midwifery. Smellie "contributed more to the fundamentals of obstetrics than virtually any individual ... he was the first to lay down safe rules regarding the use of forceps ... [and] invented the 'Smellie manoeuvre' to deliver breech cases" (Garrison-Morton-Norman 6154.1). Norman 1955; Waller 9012.
