RUSH vs. COBBETT.
[RUSH, BENJAMIN. 1746-1813.] 4 works related to the conflict between Benjamin Rush and William Cobbett:
1. [CARPENTER, T.] A Report of an Action for Libel, Brought by Dr. Benjamin Rush..... Philadelphia: W.W. Woodward, 1800. 8vo. Later yellow paper wrappers. Scattered spotting.
2. COBBETT, WILLIAM. 1763-1835. The Rush-Light. 15th Feb. 1800. New York: William Corbett, 1800. 8vo. Disbound, extracted from a larger volume. Adhesive and paper residue on the spine, light browning.
3. ---. The Rush-Light. 15th March, 1800. New York: William Corbett, 1800. 8vo. Disbound, extracted from a larger volume. Adhesive and paper residue on the spine, browning.

All contained in a modern cloth-covered clamshell box.
Rush was a proponent of bloodletting, a "treatment" that was commonly used at the time but was falling out of favor due the lack of scientific evidence of its efficacy. He performed the procedure on many patients, including Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Pamphleteer and publisher William Cobbett, writing under the satirical pseudonym "Peter Porcupine" attacked Rush's fondness for bloodletting, accusing him of killing more patients than he had saved. Rush sued Cobbett for libel, winning a judgment of $8,000. Cobbett paid only a portion of the judgement before fleeing Pennsylvania, eventually returning to England.
