PIORRY, PIERRE ADOLPHE. 1794-1879.
De la percussion médiate et des signes obtenus a l'aide de ce nouveau moyen d'exploration. Paris: J.-S. Chaudé, 1828.
8vo (204 x 124 mm). 2 engraved plates (one folding). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Rubbed, joints starting, soiling to boards, foxing.
Provenance: Dr. William Brown, Glasgow (booklabel).
"Piorry, pioneer of mediate percussion, introduced the percussor and the pleximeter in 1826. He also developed refinements to Laennec's stethoscope" (Garrison-Morton-Norman 2675). "There are two types of percussion: direct and indirect (also known as mediate). Auenbrugger described and practiced the direct type, striking the subject's chest with glove-encased finger tips and not bothering to remove the patient's shirt ... It is interesting to note that when Laennec introduced his mediate auscultation he practiced percussion by striking the chest with his fingers while listening with his stethoscope. True refinement of Auenbrugger's technique did not come until the introduction of mediate percussion by Piorry in 1828" (Acierno 462). "A classic on percussion in its day" (Bedford 471). Norman 1709.
