8vo (204 x 133 mm). Errata leaf (e2) and part 1 section title (3k4), bound in their original quires, rather than in each other's place as intended; publisher's advertisements; 8 engraved plates by John Pope Vibert. Rubbed; Medical Society of Edinburgh library stamps on title, first page of part 1, and verso of each plate; some staining, offsetting and browning.
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, translated from the French by John Forbes, who "probably did as much as anyone to popularize the use of the stethoscope and to introduce Laennec's teaching to English reads" (Norman 1256); see PMM 280; Waller 5487; Wellcome III, p 429.
