KOCH, ROBERT. 1843-1910.

Die Aetiologie der Tuberculose. IN: Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift, volume 19, number 15. Berlin: Hirschwald, 1882.
Folio (315 x 237 mm). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Rubbed, corners bumped, browning, library stamps to front free endpaper and first title.
Provenance: The Trudeau Sanatorium (bookplate); Pharmacological Laboratory, Western Reserve Medical College (stamps); Jeremy Norman (Catalog 13, item 447, 1985 - bookmark inserted at front).

FIRST EDITION. Koch's article announces his discovery of the bacterium that he believed was the cause of tuberculosis. Some of his contemporaries, such as Virchow, were not convinced, but history has proven Koch to be correct. Trudeau Sanatorium, whose bookplate appears on the front pastedown, was established in 1885 in Saranac Lake, New York, as a treatment center for tuberculosis. Although most of the cottages built for their patients remain intact, the sanatorium was closed in 1954, after the successful development of antibiotic treatments for the disease. Garrison-Morton-Norman 2331; Waller 5338a.
