INCUNABULUM OF PRINTING FOR THE BLIND

[Institution royale des jeunes aveugles ... Exercice public ... Programme. Paris: Imprimé par les jeunes aveugles, 1825.]
550 x 285 mm. Folded, printed in raised type on 2 conjugate folio leaves, uncut.

This program for a musical concert given by students at the French Institute for the Blind lists the young Louis BRAILLE (1809-52) among its participants. It was printed in raised type by the students. The embossed type method of printing for the blind, developed at the end of the 18th century by Valentin Hauy, founder of the Institute for the Blind, was the first touch system for the blind. It was the forerunner of Braille's dot system, which he began to develop about the time he participated in the concert described in the program.
