8vo (197 x 126 mm). Woodcut headpieces and initials. Contemporary paneled calf, modern cloth-covered clamshell box. Joints cracked, chipping to spine, soiling and browning.
Provenance: Swynfen Jervis, Esq., English barrister, 1700-1777 (bookplate); Charles Singer, British historian, 1876-1960 (ownership inscription on front free endpaper).

"[Boerhave] introduced exact quantitative methods into chemistry by measuring temperature and using the best available balances made by Fahrenheit; indeed he may be considered the founder of physical chemistry as well as a contributor to pneumatic chemistry and biochemistry" (DSB).
