8vo (220 x 135 mm). 3 woodcut illustrations in text. Contemporary sheep, rebacked in brown buckram, paper lettering piece on spine. Covers worn, dampstaining, tears to 2 leaves after title page, foxing.
FIRST EDITION. Beaumont was a U.S. Army surgeon from Connecticut and a veteran of the War of 1812. In 1822, while stationed at Michilimackinac, Michigan Territory, he treated an employee of the American Fur Company, Alexis St. Martin, who was wounded by an accidental shotgun blast. The injury left a permanent hole in St. Martin's stomach, which Beaumont used as an opportunity to study the digestive process over a period of ten years. A classic work in physiology.
