4to (270 x 212 mm). Engraved portrait frontis, 7 hand-colored aquatint plates, 3 maps (one folding, with tears). Calf-backed boards, worn, dried, front cover detached, first gathering loose, dampstaining.
Provenance: George Warre (engraved bookplate).
Ellis, in the capacity of third commissioner, accompanied Lord Amherst's embassy to China in 1816. He provides a detailed account of the expedition, including its early curtailment due to Amherst's refusal to kowtow to the Emperor. "This edition, with hand-coloured aquatints, is much prized" (Hill 542). Abbey Travel 536; Cordier Sinica 2393; Lust 509.
