MELVILLE SIGNED QUOTE.

MELVILLE, HERMAN. 1819-1891. Autograph Quotation Signed ("Herman Melville"), "Hours Bright. Herman Melville, March 8, 1882," 199 x 120 mm, framed beneath a portrait of Melville, to 415 x 685 mm.

RARE AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION SIGNED BY MELVILLE. Reminiscent of Moby Dick, Melville signs beneath his simple poetic expression, "Hours bright," and dates it beneath. By 1882, Melville was working for the customs office, and that year he declined to join the distinguished Author's Club as he had become "too much of a hermit," and his "nerves could no longer stand large gatherings." Yet, interestingly, we trace two other Melville autograph quotations signed by Melville in early March of that year, one on March 2, and a second also on March 8. A fine presentation of a notoriously scarce autograph.
