MASSINGER, PHILIP. 1583-1640.

The Great Duke of Florence. London: John Marriot, 1636.
Small 4to (175 x 128 mm). Woodcut ornament on title, woodcut headpiece and decorative initial, leaf A4, with laudatory verses by George Donne and John Ford, bound at end. 19th century quarter calf and marbled boards, rebound with cloth spine, cloth chemise and quarter calf slipcase. Rubbed, some staining to boards, margins somewhat trimmed, some marginal worming, foxing, lacking blanks.

FIRST EDITION of one of Massinger's later plays. Overshadowed by his contemporaries, Massinger seems to have struggled to make a living with his writings, but he was a prolific author and collaborator, known particularly for his work with John Fletcher.
