HUME, DAVID. 1711-1776.

Four Dissertations. I. The Natural History of Religion. II. Of the Passions. III. Of Tragedy. IV. Of the Standard of Taste. London: A. Millar, 1757.
12mo (162 x 99 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title, errata at foot of final text page. 20th century textured cloth, Morocco lettering piece on spine. Lacking half-title, dedication, and advertisements at back, old ownership inscription to fly leaf, browning.

FIRST EDITION, later state, with corrected "lative" as the first word on p 9. The collection was originally conceived of as the first three essays along with two others: "Of Suicide," and "Of the Immortality of the Soul." These last proved controversial to readers of copies in the proof stage and were replaced by "Of the Standard of Taste" for the published edition. Fieser pp 40-1; Jessop pp 33-5.
