ENGLISH CIVIL WAR IN FICTION.

[HERBERT, SIR PERCY. 1598-1667.] Cloria and Narcissus. A Delightfull and New Romance. London: Anthony Williamson, 1653. BOUND WITH: Cloria and Narcissus Continued. London: Anthony Williamson, 1654.
8vo (160 x 106 mm). Rebacked in old cloth, retaining contemporary calf boards. Old shellac coating on covers, worn and chipped, lacking front blank (A1), upper margin somewhat trimmed.

FIRST EDITION of this romance in two parts, penned by "An Honourable Person." Sir Percy Herbert, 2nd Baron Powys, was a Catholic MP in the 1620s, who was called before the Committee for Recusants Convict in 1641, and although acquitted at the time, had most of his property seized ten years later. The character of Cloria is modeled loosely after Mary, Princess Royal, the daughter of Charles I, and some of the battles of the war are described in detail, but in this form the work remained incomplete. Herbert would later publish a complete 5-part version of the story under the title The Princess Cloria in 1661. Keeble, The Cambridge Companion to Writing of the English Revolution, p 224.
