4to (185 x 135 mm). With blank A1, and "The Printer to the Understanders" and "Hexastichon Bibliopolae" inserted after A2 (signed A and A2). Paneled calf, antique. Light wear to covers, paper repairs to margins of title and leaf A4, lacking final blank Fff4.
Provenance: Thomas Bernard (early inscription).

FIRST EDITION OF THE PRINCIPAL COLLECTION OF DONNE'S POETRY, with first uncancelled state of Nn1r without running headline and with 35 lines of text. This posthumously printed collection was taken from manuscript texts of his poems, which the author distributed to a select group of friends and patrons. Includes the first appearances of several elegies on Donne, including those of Thomas Carew and Izaak Walton. ESTC S121864; Grolier English 25; Hayward 54; Keynes Donne 78; Pforzheimer 296.
