DICKENS CHECK TO FELLOW WRITER.

DARWIN, CHARLES. 1809-1882. Check Signed ("Charles Dickens"), paid to the order of George Foster in the amount of £25, drawn on Messrs Coutts & Company, 80 x 181 mm, London, June 21, 1861, additionally signed by W.H. Wills and endorsed by Forster on the verso, inked cancellation at center not affecting signature, creased horizontally, light thumbing and toning overall.

Dickens signs this check to George Foster, most likely the journalist and author of New York by Gaslight (1850). The £25 is probably payment for a contribution to Dickens' publication All the Year Round, as William H. Wills (who also signs here) was Dickens' sub-editor.
