4to (262 x 196 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title page in red and black with engraved vignette, 9 engraved folding plates. Old limp vellum with vellum ties at edge (partially intact), inked titles on spine. Browning, staining and some ink doodles and inscriptions to covers; ink ownership inscriptions on titles, scattered spotting and staining.

FIRST EDITION. The authors, both Spanish scientists and naval officers were sent by King Philip V to join the French Geodesic Mission to Ecuador in 1734, taking measurements of the Earth's curvature at the equator. They determined that the Earth was not perfectly spheroid, but oblate. The expedition eventually led to the development of the meter as a unit of distance, derived from the calculated circumference of the Earth.
