FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE ILIAD.

HOMER. HALL, ARTHUR. translator. 1539-1605. The First Ten Books of Homers Iliades, Translated out of French by A.H. London: Ralph Newberie, 1581.
10 parts bound in 1. 4to (190 x 140 mm). Woodcut initials. Modern light brown calf antique by Middleton of London. Title page (A2) replaced in facsimile, lacking first blank (A1), quire F (pp 33-40, photostatic copies inserted), leaf A3 tipped to stub, several pages with small marginal repairs, some light soiling and staining.

FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, OF THE FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF HOMER. Arthur Hall, a rakish courtier and member of parliament, translated the first 10 books of Homer's Iliad from a prior French translation by Hugues Salel in 1571, albeit with some portions evidently translated from an unknown Latin edition. Two variants of the title page are known, the first with the translator's name in full, and the second with just his initials. He dedicated the book to his friend and fellow courtier, Sir Thomas Cecil. A rare and obscure work, rarely seen at auction. Most believe that Chapman's translation from the Greek published in 1611 was the first printing of Homer in English. STC 13631; ESTC 106156, recording just 4 copies of each issue in Institutional hands. The last copy of this work at auction was sold in Sothebys London, December 11th, 1997, lot 60, for $19,000, also lacking title and first 4 leaves.
