EDISON PAYS FOR RENOVATIONS TO FORT MYERS ESTATE.

EDISON, THOMAS ALVA. 1847-1931. Check Signed ("Thos A. Edison"), paid to the order of Seminole Lumber & Mfg Co in the amount of $311.57, drawn on the Edison Botonic Research Corporation account at the Savings Investment & Trust Company of East Orange, 75 x 218 mm, West Orange, NJ, August 10, 1928, also signed by J. Miller as Treasurer, with Bank of Fort Myers stamps to verso, perforated cancellation at center not affecting signature, light toning overall.

In 1928, Thomas Edison famously sold the contents of his laboratory at his private Fort Myers estate to Henry Ford, who moved it to Dearborn, MI to be exhibited with the recreation of the Edison laboratory. The dismantling of the lab began in June of 1928 according to the Fort Myers Press and lasted about a week. The present check, dated nearly two months later and including a memo indicating the money is for an oven, a vault, and a garage, among other things, likely concerns renovations that occurred in the wake of the sale.
