SALVAGE, JEAN-GALBERT. 1770-1813.

Anatomie du gladiateur combattant. Paris: chez l'Auteur, 1812.
Folio (580 x 422 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 21 engraved plates. 20th century quarter cloth and marbled boards, Morocco lettering piece on upper cover. Rubbed, corners bumped and chipped, spine ends slightly chipped, a little loose, bookplate removed from front paste-down, foxing and offsetting.

FIRST EDITION. Salvage, a military surgeon, used transparent layering to show the positions of bones and muscles, differentiated by color: the skeleton in black ink and the muscles and outlines of the body in red. In the tradition of Bernardino Genga's Anatomia per uso et intelligenza del disegno, Salvage presented anatomy through the ideal forms of ancient sculpture, in this case basing most of his drawings on his own sculptural studies drawn from the cadavers of young soldiers. Choulant-Frank, p 332; Waller 8435.
