REMMELIN, JOHANN. 1583-1632.

Catoptrum Microcosmicum, suis aere incisis visionibus splendens, cum historia, et pinace, de novo prodit. Augsburg: David Franck, 1619.
Folio (440 x 335 mm). Engraved title page, engraved portrait on verso of title, 3 engraved plates, each with numerous separately attached flaps revealing layers of anatomical detail. Contemporary vellum. Covers soiled and worn, title page margins repaired, with in-painted portion at lower outside corner, edge and corner repairs to several other leaves, dampstaining, some of the flaps on the plates possibly replaced in facsimile.

FIRST EDITION (though after pirated editions published in 1613/1614). The first anatomical work to attempt to show all the internal structures of the body as they would appear during dissection, using movable flaps cut from 8 separate versions of the illustrations. Although the engravings appear complete, we cannot be sure there have been no losses to the many small flaps; therefore, sold as-is, not subject to return. Choulant-Frank, p 232; Heirs of Hippocrates 456; Krivatsy 9551; Wellcome I, 5418.
