VARGAS PONCE, JOSÉ DE. 1760-1821.

Relacion del Ultimo Viage al Estrecho de Magallanes. Madrid: Ibarra, 1788-1793.
2 volumes. 4to (235 x 178 mm). Portrait frontispiece, 5 folding maps, 5 folding letterpress tables. Contemporary quarter sheep and marbled boards. Rubbed, some chipping and bumping to spine and corners, worming through covers and into margins of text block in volume 1, with paper repairs to worming, last gathering of volume 1 (Y) slightly loose, scattered foxing and browning.

FIRST EDITION, with the appendix issued in 1793 bound separately in a complimentary style. A relation of Antonio de Córdoba's expedition to the Strait of Magellan to determine if the strait was a viable trade route to Asia and the Pacific. The reports — compiled mainly by two officers on the voyage but attributed to Vargas Ponce — gave the most accurate account of the southern coasts of Argentina and Chile to date. Based on the findings of the voyage, the Spanish retained their trade routes exclusively to East-coast ports. Hill 1756; Palau 352514 & 352515; Sabin 16765 (main text only).
