2 volumes. 4to (248 x 190 mm). Engraved frontispiece in volume one, 42 engraved plates, of which 1 folding (loosely inserted in volume 1). Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt with 5 raised bands, Morocco lettering pieces. Rubbed and chipped at corners, bookplate to verso of title leaf in volume 1 (Trevisani), browning and spotting, heavy in places.

FIRST EDITION, issued simultaneously with a 4-volume 12mo edition. Lafitau was a Jesuit missionary to the Iroquois between 1712 and 1718. He argues that the North American Indians descended from the Tartar race and provides a highly detailed compendium of the social customs and religious practices of the ancient, Asian, and North American cultures.
