CARADOC OF LLANCARFAN. FL. 1135.

The Historie of Cambria, now called Wales ... Written in the Brytish Language ... Translated into English by H. Lhoyd .... London: Rafe Newberrie and Henrie Denham, 1584.
4to (180 x 140 mm). Title within wide woodcut border, numerous woodcut portraits and armorial shields (uncolored), several large woodcut initials, tipped-in photographic reproduction of a portrait of Humfrey Lhoyd before title. Re-cased in 19th century paneled tree calf, ruled and decorated in gilt, spine with 4 raised bands, titled in gilt, marbled endpapers. Repairs to joints and bottom of spine, lacking B4 (blank), margins somewhat trimmed, H4 and H5 trimmed smaller than adjacent leaves, marginal dampstaining, extensive ink marginalia.
Provenance: Thomas Ashbel (ownership inscription on colophon, dated 1596).

FIRST EDITION of the first printed history of Wales. It was the source of the legend of the discovery of America by the Welsh prince Madoc about 1170, which for "centuries spawned countless tales of encounters with Welsh Indians on the American frontier" (ODNB).
