GARCILASO DE LA VEGA, INCA. 1539-1616.

Historia general de Peru. Cordoba: Widow of Andres Barrera, 1617.
Folio (280 x 210 mm). Large woodcut of the Virgin Mary on title-page. 20th century three-quarter brown Morocco and cloth, spine with 5 raised bands. Some scuffing and staining to covers, margins a bit trimmed, manuscript notes on recto of front flyleaf, a few underlines, browning and minor staining,
Provenance: Ruben J. Dussaut (Argentinian diplomat, bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, second issue (dated only 1617). Probably the most authentic history of the Inca Empire before the Conquest. Garcilaso de la Vega was the son of a Spanish officer and an Incan princess. Born in Cuzco, he spent his early years in Peru, where he learned the legends of the Incas first-hand. Hill, p 120; Palau 354789; Sabin 98755.
