WHITNEY FAMILY PAPERS.

This lot features letters and documents relating three generations of men named Samuel F. Whitney:

WHITNEY, JR, SAMUEL F. 1732-1811.
Grandfather of Newel K. Whitney.

1. Document Signed of David Miller, deed of sale to Samuel F. Whitney for a plot of land in Marlborough (sic) VT, partially printed and accomplished in mss, 1 p, legal folio, Marlboro, VT, August 30, 1797, also signed by Jonas Whitney and James Pratt as witnesses, page toned, creased, with some mild loss at folds, some professional repairs. The patriarch of the Whitney family buys a plot of approximately 63.5 acres near Marlboro.
2. Autograph Letter Signed ("Saml Whitney"), to his son Dr. Samuel F. Whitney III regarding his health and recent news of the family, 2 pp recto and verso, legal folio, Marlboro, VT, February 24, 1810, with integral address leaf, leaves toned and creased with some loss, some professional repairs. Whitney Jr writes to Dr. Whitney III, describing the trouble he is having with "lamnes" (lameness) in his hands and feet, worrying that a previous letter has not been delivered, and discussing the younger man's recent move: "I hear that you have moofed from Brown's tract and I cannot blame you for duoing it for I believe by all I can hear that Brather Joy is veary unfrindly unto you and I wold not stay thear af I was you for I think that Joy frankly is poor company...."

WHITNEY, SAMUEL F., III. 1772-1846.
The father of Newel K. Whitney and Sam IV, himself a member of the LDS Church.

1. "Enlisting Orders June the 27th 1812." Manuscript Document Signed ("Saml Whitney"), 1 p, legal folio, Jay, Essen Co, NY, June 27, 1810, offering the services of the listed men below to the Governor of New York in defense of the Country, page toned, lower right quadrant of leaf absent, but Whitney's name still visible. Documenting Whitney's service during the War of 1812.
2. Document Signed of Nathan Hutchins, being a writ of execution by Whitney against Joseph Bartlett for $17.25, partially printed and accomplished in mss, 1 p, 8vo, Grand Isle, October 27, 1820, leaf creased, toned, waterstained. Orders Bartlett to be held in prison until the demand is paid in full.
3. Legal documents: 3 DSs, a Writ of Execution and two Summons, all partially printed and accomplished in mss, 3 pp, 4to, Montreal, June 17-December 17,1828, regarding debts owed to Samuel Whitney, III, WITH: 5 additional summonses from the District of Montreal, 1827-29, for cases not apparently related to S.F. Whitney III.
4. Manuscript Document, an 1858 true copy of a warranty deed from Samuel Whitney Sr (III) to N.K. Whitney for the sale of one acre and 40 rods of land in Kirtland Township, 3 pp recto and verso, legal folio, document originally dated August 9, 1839, light creasing and toning. The deed of sale gives the Kirtland temple as a point of reference in delineating the boundaries of the property for sale.

WHITNEY, SAMUEL F., IV. 1804-1886.
Brother of Newel K. Whitney.

1. Group of 9 legal documents relating to the sale, purchase, and mortgaging of land in Kirtland and Mentor, OH, most sales involving S.F. Whitney IV as buyer or seller, all partially printed and accomplished in mss, 9 pp, folio and 4to, 1836-1863, together with 3 receipts/promissory notes from Whitney and others regarding the land sales.

A fascinating group of documents relating to the family of LDS patriarch Newel K. Whitney, beginning with his grandfather in Vermont, his father in New York before moving to Kirtland, OH, and his brother, Dr. Samuel F. Whitney IV, who remained in Kirtland (buying and selling land frequently) while N.K. moved first to Nauvoo and later to Utah with the LDS community.

Footnotes

This lot relates to the family of Mormon leader Newel K. Whitney (1795-1850), an early convert to the LDS Church who took up a leadership role at Kirtland alongside Joseph Smith which continued through Nauvoo until his death in Utah in 1850. N.K. Whitney was the eldest of 10 children of Samuel F. Whitney III and his wife Susannah. After N.K.'s conversion, his parents and several of his siblings also joined the LDS Church, although not his brother Samuel F. Whitney IV, who figures largely in the correspondence presented here, and through whose line of descent these documents likely hail.
