WHITNEY, SAMUEL F. 1804-1886.

Three manuscript notebooks in the hand of S.F. Whitney, the brother of Newel K. Whitney and a Methodist minister serving the Ohio area, as follows:
1. Autograph Manuscript Signed of S.F. Whitney, being a concordance of bible quotes and sermon outlines, draft sermons, and poetry, 96 pp recto and verso, small 8vo, Kirtland, OH, March 10, 1829, bound in limp calf, pages toned and thumbed throughout, leaflet printed by J. Spooner of St. Albans laid in. Many pages in this journal feature a Bible quote at the top of the page ("Mark XI.22") followed by a quote ("Have faith in God"), followed by a brief outline of the direction that Whitney's sermon is to take: "1. The exhortation of the Lord to his deciples at that period. 2. The Deciples manifested grate surprise. 3. The exortation is given on to us...."

2. "... Sketch book. For the use of myself & all the rest of the nabors and I hope it will do them good." Autograph Manuscript Signed, 88 pp recto and verso, small 8vo in pencil and ink, Ottowa, January 1, 1836, containing Bible verses and scriptural analysis throughout, leaves toned and thumbed, a few leaves loose, 4 additional pp laid in, bound in limp calf. Like the above example, Whitney likely used this book as a quick reference for sermonizing: he lists a particular bible quote followed by an outline of where the argument should go during his speech.

3. "S.F. Whitney's Book ... Desined for a memarandom book for the Journal to the East in V.T." Autograph Manuscript Signed, 23 pp recto and verso, 8vo, Ohio and VT, February 8, 1842 to February 10, 1851, mostly accounting for travel and general business, some genealogical notes and a memorandum on the meeting of the Methodist E[piscopal] Church of Mentor in 1851, leaves toned with some dampstaining, bound in limp calf. The first page of this volume (dated August 29, 1844, which is not the earliest date in the book), declares the book is to be used to record expenses for a trip to VT which seems to have been a preaching tour that may have included connecting with family at St. Albans. The 1851 memo regarding the M.E. Church in Mentor names the trustees and resolves to build a meeting house by subscription.

While Samuel and Newel Whitney enjoyed a close personal and business relationship as brothers, Samuel never converted to Mormonism as his parents, two brothers and at least one sister did. These three journals are important records of his travel and his work as a Methodist Episcopal preacher during the 2nd quarter of the 18th century.

Footnotes

This lot relates to the family of Mormon leader Newel K. Whitney (1795-1850), an early convert to the LDS Church who took up a leadership role at Kirtland alongside Joseph Smith which continued through Nauvoo until his death in Utah in 1850. N.K. Whitney was the eldest of 10 children of Samuel F. Whitney III and his wife Susannah. After N.K.'s conversion, his parents and several of his siblings also joined the LDS Church, although not his brother Samuel F. Whitney IV, who figures largely in the correspondence presented here, and through whose line of descent these documents likely hail.
