WHITNEY FAMILY PROPERTY DOCUMENTS.

WHITNEY, SAMUEL F. 1804-1886. Manuscript Document Signed ("S.F. Whitney"), his bond to Robert French, 1 p, legal folio, Kirtland, OH, December 25, 1845, also signed by Robert French and Peter French, page toned, soiled at horizontal creases.

Though Peter French sold large swaths of property to the Mormon Church in the 1830s, it seems that he was not done acquiring real estate in the Kirtland area after that date. Some 8 years after Smith and his followers left Kirtland, Dr. Samuel F. Whitney allows French's son Robert to essentially take over the mortgage on a piece of land originally sold to his father Peter French. In this 1845 document, Dr. Whitney agrees to "convey by deed unto Robert French all that tract or parsel of land inbraced in the article made to Peter French in the year 1839, March the 10th." For his part, Robert agrees to live on and maintain the land and "pay up the remainder of the purches money due in the Said Article with the interest to the Said Whitney & to furnish Peter & Sally French his naturel father & mother with a liberal support from the in come of the said farm together with money & means to travel or viset their friends as they shall or may require...."

It's not certain if this Dr. Whitney referenced here is the younger or the elder, but most likely the younger.

Footnotes

This lot relates to the family of Mormon leader Newel K. Whitney (1795-1850), an early convert to the LDS Church who took up a leadership role at Kirtland alongside Joseph Smith which continued through Nauvoo until his death in Utah in 1850. N.K. Whitney was the eldest of 10 children of Samuel F. Whitney III and his wife Susannah. After N.K.'s conversion, his parents and several of his siblings also joined the LDS Church, although not his brother Samuel F. Whitney IV, who figures largely in the correspondence presented here, and through whose line of descent these documents likely hail.
