[PÉREZ DE GUZMÁN, FERNÁN. 1376-1458.]

Cronica del serenissimo Rey Don Juan el Secundo. [Logroño: Arnao Guillén de Brocar, 1517.]
Folio (320 x 236 mm). Title page in red and black with large woodcut vignette of the authors presenting the book to Charles V, within woodcut borders; full-page woodcut of the crucifixion; full-page woodcut of King Juan II on horseback within historiated border, printed in red and black; text in semi-Gothic type in 2 columns. 18th century mottled calf, spine gilt with 6 raised bands and Morocco lettering piece, marbled endpapers. Scuffed, corners bumped, extensive reparations to title page with upper corner replaced in facsimile, leaves n1, n8 and o8 supplied from a smaller copy, leaf o7 partially replaced in manuscript, last 6 leaves (ii1-6) replaced in manuscript, lacking inserted leaf between A4 and A5, marginal repairs to second leaf (✠2), top margins trimmed, a few marginal paper repairs and marginal worming, browning, staining, ink marginalia and underlining.

FIRST EDITION of "one of the most sumptuously printed of the early Spanish books" (Lyell). Although attributed to Fernan Pérez de Guzman, who was certainly one of the compilers of this collection of works of various authors, that attribution has been called into question (see Palau). Nonetheless, it remains a remarkable example of Spanish typography, and an important chronicle of 15th century Spain. Brunet II, 1837-8; Heredia 3131; Lyell Early Book Illustration in Spain, p 286; Palau 64966; Salva 3117.
