SHAKER MANUSCRIPT HYMNAL: WOMEN'S WORDS.

Nineteenth-century musical manuscript in ink, being a collection of original Shaker hymns and songs, many in a single hand, and many utilizing Shaker musical notation, and many attributed to names, both written out and initials, primarily women, and community, 102 pp (89 pp written), ink on lined paper, 12mo (168 x 103 mm), c. 1880-1884, contemporary black sheepskin.
WITH: manuscript note laid-in, in part, "Dear Sister Catharine,/ I send 'Women's Words" Will you be kind enough to get the Monthly 'Women's Words" I think Nancy Fairbanks has it. I told her I did not want it circulated. She might let Maria Wood have them," 1 p, "Jan 22, 1879," signature trimmed away, with Shaker needlepoint and stenciled print in envelope.
Provenance: Likely Catherine Hall (Harvard Commune, 1813-1890, manuscript note); Raymond Adams (1898-1987, noted Thoreau scholar and collector, founder of the Thoreau Society); by descent.

WOMEN'S WORDS: A FANTASTIC SHAKER HYMNAL, MANY ORIGINAL INSPIRED SONGS ATTRIBUTED TO THEIR SINGER. The attributed creators include many with multiple contributions including "Anna White/... Lebanon" (who was second eldress beginning in 1865, and compiled numerous songs), "Elvah Collins N[orth].F[amily]. Lebanon," "Ellen Green Harvard," and "1882 Canaan Maria S[chulz]," as well as one with additional attribution, "Sung by Eldress Betsy Bates and Elizabeth Jacson in meeting at Alfred Maine." The dated contributions cover the years 1880 - 1884, and other singers include "Canaan Florence S.," "Harvard C. Tremper," "Myra McSean Canaan South Family," "O. Sawyer Alfred," and "Elder A. Perkins Enfield NH 1883." Of the attributions, all but a handful are to women singers and most of the major villages are represented. With an interesting manuscript note laid-in to "Catherine," possibly Catherine Hall (see lot 105).
