SHAKER MANUSCRIPT HYMNAL.

Nineteenth-century musical manuscript, being a collection of original Shaker hymns and songs in multiple hands, most utilizing Shaker musical notation, and many attributed to particular singers with initials and community, mainly Shirley and Mt Lebanon, 46 pp in ink on lined paper, 12mo (170 x 105 mm), c. 1870, patterned green paper wrappers, string bound, minor creasing, with additional manuscript hymn laid-in, "Ich Dien – I Serve," apparently unpublished, as well as a note, dated 1879.
Provenance: Likely Sister Catherine Hall (Harvard Commune, 1813-1890, from an unidentified note laid-in regarding John Gregersen, "written down for Sister Catherine Hall, Septbr 14, 1878"); Raymond Adams (1898-1987, noted Thoreau scholar and collector, founder of the Thoreau Society); by descent.

A FANTASTIC SHAKER HYMNAL WITH MANY SONGS ATTRIBUTED WITH INITIALS AND COMMUNITY. The attributed songs include "We are bravely tossing o'er life" (Mt Lebanon), "Down to the deep and rolling river" (Eldress M.A.G.), "O Lord before thee now we come" (A.W.), I Dwell Among the Living" (Elder AP), "Rejoice O Ye People for Daylight is Dawning" (BH Church), and many more.
