Masters of Photography

From Edward S. Curtis to Berenice Abbott
30 January – 8 February 2023

The first half of the mid-winter Photographs sale spotlights Edward S. Curtis's 20-volume magnum opus, 'The North American Indian,' published from 1907 to 1930. Thirty rare platinum and gelatin silver prints – all of them Curtis's personal photographs used for publication purposes – remained in the artist's possession until the end of his life. Prints such as these had been sent to J.P. Morgan, the project's benefactor, to communicate Curtis's content and design of each volume. Additionally, a wide selection of large-format photogravures from 'The North American Indian' are featured in the sale.

The second half of the auction focuses on modern and contemporary masters of the medium. Photographs include architectural images by Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, and Louis Stettner; portraits by Walker Evans, Carl van Vechten, Man Ray, Flip Schulke, and Bert Stern; Weegee's New York Portfolio; a cheeky figure study by Arno Rafael Minkkinen; and works by Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, and Andres Serrano, all offered at No Reserve.
