The bronze depicts an incident from the poem, Mazeppa, by Lord Byron. The poem tells the story of Ivan Mazeppa, a page at the Court of King John II Casimir Vasa. The young Mazeppa has an affair with the Countess Theresa who was married to a much older Count. As a punishment Ivan Mazeppa was banished from court tied to a horse. In the poem he is rescued and nursed by a Cossack maiden to become the Hetman (military leader) of Ukraine.
