JOHN GRAHAM LOUGH (BRITISH, 1789-1876)

A bronze figure group depicting Ivan Mazeppa
Modelled as Mazeppa strapped to his horse, on a naturalistic ground, signed J.G. LOUGH to the base, on a later walnut plinth, 54 wide, 28cm deep, 34cm high (21in wide, 11in deep, 13in high)

Footnotes

The bronze depicts an incident from the poem, Mazeppa, by Lord Byron. The poem tells the story of Ivan Mazeppa, a page at the Court of King John II Casimir Vasa. The young Mazeppa has an affair with the Countess Theresa who was married to a much older Count. As a punishment Ivan Mazeppa was banished from court tied to a horse. In the poem he is rescued and nursed by a Cossack maiden to become the Hetman (military leader) of Ukraine.
