Footnotes

A study of Alice Liddell (1852–1934), who as a child was Lewis Carroll's muse (the original Alice for Alice through the Looking Glass), posed in the role of St. Agnes. In 1872, during a family holiday in Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, Alice was introduced to Julia Margaret Cameron, who photographed her and her sisters on several occasions between August and September, in the guise of a variety of religious or classical figures. See Cox & Ford, Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs, 2003, no. 351.
