Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) signed this menu on a sojourn in Cairo on his way home from the controversial Emin Pasha relief expedition in 1890. It comes from the autograph collection of Sir Thomas Villiers Lister, originally formed by his mother Lady Maria Theresa Lewis (née Villiers, 1803-1865). A career diplomat, he held the post of Assistant Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs between 1873 and 1894.
Provenance: Sir Thomas Villiers Lister (1832-1902); thence by descent.
