John Barrow was a member of Lord Macartney's embassy to China, and his works includes "an account of that mission that contains some first-hand information not found in Staunton" (Lowendahl).

Provenance: George Cornwall Legh (1804-1877, Member of Parliament for Chester from 1841 to 1873), bookplate; William Orme Foster (1814-1899), Apley Park bookplate. Foster, an iron master and Member of Parliament for South Staffordshire from 1857-1868, purchased the Apley Park estate near Bridgnorth in 1868; by descent to the present owner.
