LARKIN (PHILIP)

The Less Decieved, fourth edition, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED "For Dr. Yen, with kindest regards from Philip Larkin 11 April 1961" on the front free endpaper, publisher's cloth, dust-jacket (spine faded and slightly worn at ends), 8vo, Marvell, 1958

Footnotes

Provenance: Adeline Yen Mah ("Dr. Yen"), with presentation inscription from the author. Having collapsed during a University committee meeting at Hull University in March 1961 Larkin was referred to Sir Russell Brain at the London Hospital in Whitechapel. His house physician at this time was Dr. Yen Mah. Writing to Maeve Brennan on 10 April 1961 (the day prior to the inscription in this book) noted that "Miss Yen" (as he called her) "keeps asking how one writes poetry, how one manages the beats & rhythms". See online article "Adeline Yen Mah" by Jim Orwin and John Osborne (2006) for a full description of the meeting, and the influence Larkin had on Yen Mah's subsequent successful career as an author, including her memoir Falling Leaves (1997).
