An Ottoman metal-thread embroidered leather wallet
Turkey, dated AD 1767

of rectangular form with cusped flap, the red morocco profusely embroidered in silver and gilt thread with panels of floral decoration and wreaths containing floral motifs and sprays, the flap lifting to reveal the inscription 'Constantinople, 1767', green silk lining
17.9 x 11.1 cm.

The present lot is an example of the souvenirs and gifts produced within the Ottoman empire during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that were brought back by travellers, bearing the date and city in which they were purchased and often featuring elaborate embroidery.
