Persia, 12th Century

the gadrooned body of slightly flaring form on a splayed foot, with long neck terminating in a spout, strap handle to one side, engraved and decorated with inscriptions to the shoulder, the body with alternating vertical panels of scrolling vines and inscriptions, the neck with foliate motifs and repoussé lions to each side

Inscriptions: to the body, in Kufic, bi'l-yumn wa al-barakah wa al-barakah wa al-bir, 'With good-fortune and blessing and blessing and piety' and bi'l-yum, 'With good-fortune', followed by a repetition of wa al-birr, 'and piety'.
