Egypt, 19th Century

the bamboo shaft profusely engraved with architectural and landscape scenes between each node, including a mosque, the Pyramids, port scenes, an inscription on a hatched ground and a camel, the amber handle in two parts interspersed by silver-gilt mounts and a painted glass band, the pommel mounted in silver-gilt engraved with further landscape scenes and surmounted by an inscription-filled roundel, gilt-copper tip, later umbrella frame by Paragon and red satin canopy

Inscriptions: to pommel, tawakkaltu 'ala allah, 'I put my trust in God'; within the landscape scenes an inscription identifying a building jami'(?) husayn (?) fahmi, 'The mosque (?) of Husayn (?) Fahmi'; inscription to centre of handle undeciphered.

Husayn Fahmi Pasha was an architect of the Khedival family who studied in Paris and was commissioned in 1869 to construct the al-Rifa'i mosque in Cairo, which was not completed until 1912.
