Jodhpur, circa 1850-60

gouache, gold and silver on paper
265 x 345 mm.

Footnotes

The painting is reminiscent of a work dated circa 1840-50, and attributed to the court artist Bulaki, in which Takhat Singh plays polo with seven other riders, formed up in a circle with their sticks forming, as it were, the spokes of a wheel (see Sotheby's New York, Important Indian Miniatures from the Paul F. Walter Collection, 14th November 2002, lot 43).
