Footnotes

Provenance
Perhaps formerly in the collection of the Duke of Wellington, pre-1954, according to a label on the backboard (perhaps Henry Wellesley, 6th Duke, killed in 1943, or Gerald Wellesley (1885-1972), the 7th Duke).
Private collection, London, circa 1970s-present.

According to a typewritten label on the backboard, the painting depicts Tana Khan, Mughal, circa 1675. This appears to refer to Tana Shah, which is a misnomer for Muhammad Adil Shah II, Sultan of Bijapur (reg. 1627-57). See M. Zebrowski, Deccani Painting, London 1983, pp. 122-138 in general, and in particular pp. 130-131, figs. 98 and 99; W. G. Archer, T. Falk, Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library, nos. 406 and 407.
