Provenance
Formerly in a private collection, Sussex, UK, since the 1970s-80s.

The inscriptions read: 'Likeness of Dara Shokuh'; 'Likeness of Shah Jahan, the Warrior King'; 'Likeness of Ja'far Khan Bahadur'.

The painting is modelled on Govardhan's portrayal of Shah Jahan with Dara Shikoh, circa 1638, from the Minto Album, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, with the figures reversed, and with the addition of the two standing figures.
