Footnotes

Provenance
Formerly in the Shiv Kumar Chirimar collection, Amsterdam.

Exhibited and Published
Joachim Bautze, Indian Miniature Paintings, c. 1590–c. 1850, Galerie Saundarya Lahari, Amsterdam 1987, pp. 23-24, cat. no. 7.

The outlining in white is unusual, and it is possible that the painting is only partly finished. A painting with similarly subdued colours, depicting four musicians on a terrace, in the Islamische Museum des Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, from an album formerly owned by Col. Polier at Lucknow, and inscribed in Polier's own hand as No. 16 Musiciens d'Agra, could be by the same artist or from the same atelier. A painting in the Victoria and Albert Museum (IS.224-1955) of very similar style, depicting a maiden seated on a terrace, is attributed to Bikaner, circa 1680.
