John Smith, York
The hood with (removable) inverted caddy top surmounted by a pedestal over deep ogee moulded cornice, side windows and freestanding brass-mounted Doric columns, the door with shaped top and line inlay over a plain panelled base on moulded skirt. The 12 inch arched brass dial with strike/silent subsidiary framed by addorsed dolphin frets over bold foliate scroll spandrels enclosing a Roman and Arabic chapter ring signed Smith, York at VI, with matted centre and matching blued steel hands, cast in the 'cartwheel' style of many of the northern makers. The weight driven movement with four knopped pillars uniting the small plates, deadbeat escapement to a flat steel strip pendulum terminating in a heavy brass lenticular bob, the strike train intended to be 'three parts in two' (incomplete) with twin hammers, five wheel train and arrowhead shaped fly, (bells lacking, but stand present). The movement secured to the seatboard via two shaped steel hooks secured from below and locating through holes along the bottom edge of both plates. Together with the pendulum and two weights. 2.37m (7ft 9ins) high.
