A good mid-late 18th century mahogany longcase clock with deadbeat escapement and wheels of six crossings out throughout

John Hartley, York
The hood with boxed swan neck pediment raised on freestanding Doric columns, the long trunk framed by matching quarter-columns and door with shaped top, over a panelled base on ogee bracket feet. The 12 inch arched brass dial framed by six foliate scroll mounts, a large date subsidiary over the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring enclosing the silvered centre with engraved subsidiary seconds and decorated with a pair of birds and the signature within a foliate cartouche. The movement secured to the seatboard via twin bolts locating into holes along the lower edges of the plates which are united by four turned baluster pillars, with deadbeat escapement and wheels of six crossings out, rack striking on a bell (the hour snail on a separate stud with star and jumper, possibly originally for quarter striking?). The pendulum with brass lenticular bob and triangular-section steel rod, with a pair of brass-clad weights. (Case possibly associated). 2.44m (8ft) high.

Footnotes

Rodney suspected that this movement was probably a stock-movement of Hindley's, finished up by Hartley.
