A fine late 18th century mahogany longcase clock with age and phases of the moon, and concentric date
H. Deward, Widnes
The boxed swan neck pediment with carved floral mounts and verre eglomise panels set on six reeded columns and half-columns, the convex throat moulding with delicately carved open scrollwork over a bookmatched-veneered door flanked by quarter columns on a panelled base with canted angles and ogee bracket feet. The 13 inch arched brass dial with painted rolling moon framed by the legend TIME SHEWS THE WAY OF LIFE'S DECAY AND TIME IS VALUABLE, scroll spandrels, silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, the cross-hatched centre set with subsidiary seconds and a fancy signature plaque. The movement with four knopped pillars, anchor escapement and rack striking on a bell. Together with a pair of iron weights, a brass-faced pendulum and a door key. 2.32m (7ft 8ins) high.
