Two rare and monumental Meissen figural vases and covers emblematic of 'Spring' and 'Summer', second quarter 19th century
After 18th-century models by J.J. Kaendler, each moulded with scrollwork and trellis pattern, applied with fruit, flowers and figures emblematic of their Season, one cover with a female figure, the other with a bouquet of flowers, each on a gilt-metal circular stand raised on three claw feet with pierced scrollwork and cartouches, surmounted by a velvet-lined giltwood base, the vases with covers: 120cm and 1...cm high, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue (losses and old restoration) (4)

These monumental vases were originally modelled by J.J. Kaendler in the late 1740s. The vase emblematic of "Spring" is listed in Kaendler's work notes in November 1748: "Ein groß Ausatz Stück in gestalt einer Vase, 3 Ellen winiger 9 Zoll hoch und 1 Elle 12 Zoll breit, welches den Frühling vorstellet. Es ist besagte Vase um und um mit dn feisten Zierraten versehen, hauptsächlich das gantze Werk allenhalben auf Korp Arth durchbrochen, aus welchem Korbe die allerschönsten Blumen Ranken und Pouquets hervorkommen. Obenauf sitzet eine große Figur die Flora aufs sauberste vorgestellet, wie selbige Blumen ausstreuet und in der einen Hand einen Blumen Crantz hält, welches alles aifs sauberste auspoussiret ist."
Kaendler's work records do not survive after December 1748; it is probable that the vases emblematic of the remaining seasons were modelled early in 1749.
The model of 'Spring' is illustrated in the 1846 Meissen manufactory catalogue of 18th-century models, mostly of the rococo period (called "English taste"), that were revived from the mid 1820s at the behest of the English trade (see J. Kunze, Die Bedutung des "englischen Handels" mit Porzellanen im "altfranzösischen Geschmack" der Meissen Manufaktur in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, in Keramos 95 (1982), pp. 37-50 and ill. 2.
A set of all four vases was sold at Christie's New York, 21 Oct 2015, lot 227, and a single one emblematic of Spring sold at Christie's London, 22 Sep 2022, lot 195.
