Professor Filippo Toldini proposed an attribution to Zenone Veronese (1484-1554) at the last time of sale.

The figures in the upper half of the composition are derived from an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi, in reverse, after a lost drawing by Raphael (see: G.B. Pezzini, Raphael Invenit, Rome, 1985, p. 168, ill., p. 670).
