Smith, Alfred E. (1873-1944) Two Typed Letters Signed.

To Walter Scott, 1930. Both dated 3 October, typed on Alfred E. Smith letterhead, one discussing the naming of the Empire State Building noting "I like the name 'Empire State Building' the best. I suppose, however, that it will be referred to as the 'Al Smith Building' but I have been so identified with the Empire State for so many years that it might be well to let them ride together."; the second letter offering thanks for a book recently received, both signed "Alfred E. Smith" in black ink, (folds, short tear to top edge of first letter, small pencil marks), 10 1/2 x 8 in.

Note: Alfred E. Smith served four terms as New York State Governor, 1919-1920 and 1923-1928, and ran unsuccessfully for President in 1928 on the Democratic ticket. After the election, Smith became President of Empire State, Incorporated, and was responsible for the construction of the Empire State Building constructed between March 17, 1930 and May 1, 1931.,
