Melville, Herman (1819-1891)

The Works of Herman Melville, The Standard edition, limited to 750 sets. Large 8vo, 16 volumes. Bound in original publisher's blind-stamped cloth, with gilt lettering, top edge gilt. The volume titled "Poems" lacks a half-inch triangle of cloth at the top of the spine, some intermittent pencil underling, "Piazza Tales" has a closed tear from one leaf, two dust jacket flaps laid in, previous owner's bookplate on the end paper.
This set includes the first publication of Melville's Billy Budd, which was discovered in manuscript among Melville's papers at the time.,
